November ~ Holiday Countdown Checklists

Hereis my list to work on... by the end of November:

Wrap gifts as soon as you get them home. Keep receipts in one place.

Arrange a holiday cookie exchange with friends and neighbors. Then you only have to bake one kind! Bake ahead of time and freeze!

Get holiday photo taken professionally or do it yourself. Or pick out a picture from the year past to give with cards. ***  This needs to be done 1st!  The last 2 years someone was always sick or crabby to get a family photo done and no cards went out =-(. Sorry family and friends.  Nothing personal... just a crazy time of year!!!
Address cards. While you are at it, buy labels and put them over old addresses in your address book (or make sure you always use a pencil). Write a "family" letter? Do a draft now and then finish the details later.

Plan your holiday menus. Write out a shopping list.

Plan a holiday event such as caroling or cookie decorating party. MAYBE

About 1 3/4 cups flour

Vegetable shortening for frying

Turn out on a floured bowl and knead for a few minutes. Roll out to 1/2 thick and cut out doughnuts. Place on a floured wax paaper for about 5 min. Fry the doughnuts till golden brown. Drain on paper towel and dust with sugar.

Graham Cracker Yummies

Cover greased cookie sheet w/ graham crackers. Boil for 2 minutes--1 cup of brown sugar & 2 sticks of margarine. Add 1/2 cup chopped nuts (I like walnuts, but pecans would probably be good, too!) and then pour over crackers. Bake in 350 oven for 10 minutes. When cool, break apart graham crackers into squares. Yummy!

Stampin' Up! Trimmer Is Available!

Introducing the new and improved Stampin' Trimmer! Although paper trimmers are a common crafting tool, this trimmer was designed exclusively by paper crafters for paper crafters AND because it was made by Stampin' Up!, you know it's a cut above the rest!

Features of the All-New Stampin' Trimmer

•An extra-wide 6-1/4" cutting base and an extended 14-1/2" ruler

◦The extra-wide cutting base provides a large work area and is marked in 1/4" (4 mm) increments, allowing for small measurements.

◦The right-side grid helps you measure and cut very thin strips.

◦The extended cutting arm has a stabilizing leg to provide a sturdy and steady cutting surface for longer cuts.

◦When fully extended, the extended cutting arm sits flush with the trimmer base, providing more accurate and consistent measurements across the entire surface.

◦The cutting base and track include a full ruler, incorporating measurements down to 1/16" and grid lines that mark each quarter inch.

◦All rulers and measurements on the base are printed under a plastic cover so your measurements won't wear off.

◦The base has nonskid feet, which keeps the Stampin' Trimmer securely in place on your work area.

•A full 12" cutting and scoring track

◦The extra-long cutting track has space at the top and bottom so you don't have to take the cutting and scoring blades out when you're not using them.

◦The track gives you enough space to cut or score a full 12" (30.5 cm) without having to remove or switch out handles.

◦The cutting track locks in place for secure storage or transport.

◦The track includes an insertion point for cutting and scoring blade handles so you can easily insert handles into the cutting track.

•Specially designed handles and cutting track to ensure straight cuts

◦The hook on the scoring and cutting blade handles keeps the handles stable so the cuts are as straight as possible.

◦Handles come in two colors: dark for cutting, light for scoring.

◦The precision tip on the cutting blade allows you to pinpoint precisely where you're cutting.

◦The point on the side of each handle shows you where the blade will cut, making it easy to see exactly where your cuts and scores will begin.

•Storage compartment under base

◦The storage compartment holds scoring and cutting tools such as a Bone Folder, Simply Scored Stylus, extra scoring and cutting blades, and even business cards.

◦Separate compartments within the storage compartment keep your tools organized, and the clear cover makes it easy to see what you've stored.

Slow Cooker Chicken

Here is a very easy and very delicious crockpot or dutch oven recipe (we cook it in the dutch oven when we are camping and in the crockpot when we are home).

4-6 chicken breasts         1 large onion, sliced

2 cups ketchup             2 cups barbeque sauce
Layer chicken and onion in crockpot or dutch oven. Pour ketchup and barbeque sauce over chicken and onion. Cook 7 or 8 hours on low in crockpot.

Sides: We love to eat it with potatoes or rice, a vegie, and a tossed salad.

Left overs: Dice the left over chicken and onions. Freeze with sauce. Use it on pizza with cheese for a quick meal (buy a premade pizza crust for an even quicker meal).

Not sure where this recipe came from but it is a good one.

Mini Cheesecakes

I love to make mini-cheesecakes with puff pastry shells! It's so easy, and they're always a big hit. The little shells are available in the frozen food section of the market. Then I buy the Jello No-bake Cheesecake and a can of cherry pie filling. Just follow the directions on the cheesecake box, omitting the first step (the crust). After mixing the filling, just spoon it into the puff pastry shells, top with cherry filling and Viola! An easy appetizer that any SHE can make!!

Flybaby Fridge Cleaner (leftovers)

I call it the Flybaby Fridge Cleaner and it is from Newmarket, Ontario - north of Toronto.

One whole chicken, or chicken parts - rinsed and placed into Crock pot. Mix together odds and ends from your fridge door and cupboards to equal one cup. Add bits of salad dressings, jam the kids didn't like, etc. Works best if it half sweet - jams, etc and half savoury - salad dressings, bbq sauce, etc. Clean out a lot of clutter and it is always good but never the same twice!

October ~ Holiday Countdown Checklists

Here's a Holiday Countdown Checklist that I am trying to use
By the end of October or maybe the end of December... lol.

Make one list of the gifts you need to buy and carry it around with you. Try and purchase one gift every time you are out shopping (don't forget gifts for teachers, babysitters and others that have helped you this year).

Begin to cook double of one meal each week. Good meals to try are chili, pulled chicken or pork, beef stew (all can be done in a crock pot and then frozen). I haven't done this one yet.

Get tickets to holiday events--seats for seasonal favorites fill up fast.

Arrange travel, hotels and boarding for pets. if you travel?!?! not me =-)

Good Luck !!!

Chicken 'n Dumplins

4 cups cooked chicken, bite-size pieces

5 cups chicken broth

1 stick butter

1/2 cup milk

salt and pepper to taste

1 1/2 cups self-rising flour

1/2 cup shortening

buttermilk

Combine broth, butter, milk, salt, and pepper; set aside. Cut shortening into flour. Add enough buttermilk to make dough. On floured board, roll dough thin. Cut into 1 x 2" strips. Heat chicken and broth mixture until very hot. Slowly drop a few strips of dough; cook as you go. Continue adding dough strips until all are added. Cook until dough is done. Stir often being careful not to let the dumplins on the bottom burn.

NOTE: I have heard of using frozen or refrigerated pie crusts for dumplins but haven't tried it.

Chili Verde

This is one i want to try!!!

2 1/2 cups salsa verde (If you have a Trader Joe's store near you, use theirs -- it's the best!)

3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or 1 lb boneless pork loin

1 14 oz can black beans, drained and rinsed

1 14 oz can white beans, drained and rinsed

Hot, cooked rice

Place 2 cups of the salsa verde in the Crock-Pot. Stir in the chilies. Add meat. Cook on high for 4 hours. Take meat out of Crock-Pot and shred. Add back to Crock-Pot along with remaining 1/2 cup salsa and the 2 cans of beans. Stir and cook on high for 30 more minutes. Serve over rice. - cased from:Fluttering in Fremont, CA
